Applications of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) delivers versatile performance across biochemistry, industrial formulations, and oral care. As an anionic detergent it solubilizes and denatures proteins for PAGE and related assays; as a surfactant it provides wetting, cleaning, emulsifying and foaming action in laboratory and industrial systems; and in toothpaste it supports effective lather and plaque removal, often used together with zinc sulphate in toothpaste for enhanced functional performance. Performance depends on concentration, purity grade, electrolyte tolerance and the complete formulation—share your specific application so we can confirm the right specification and documentation before you order.

Protein solubilization and denaturation

SDS is used as an anionic detergent to solubilize and denature proteins. In denaturing PAGE applications, proteins commonly bind SDS at approximately 1.4 g SDS per gram of protein. The charge contributed by bound SDS largely masks the protein's intrinsic charge, so migration is primarily related to molecular size.

  • Specification basis: ≥99% active matter is shown; confirm protocol-specific purity and absorbance limits

  • Selection checks: active matter, UV absorbance, inorganic salts and protocol requirements

  • Process note: confirm concentration and compatibility with the complete buffer or assay system

Surfactant and detergent functions

As a sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant, SDS can provide wetting, cleaning, emulsifying and foaming functions in compatible laboratory and industrial formulations. Required purity, electrolyte tolerance and process behavior should be evaluated in the complete formulation.

  • Recommended grade: determined by formulation, process and destination-market requirements

  • Selection checks: active matter, pH, soluble impurities and required foam profile

  • Process note: evaluate electrolyte, temperature and ingredient compatibility in the final formulation

Toothpaste foaming systems

Sodium dodecyl sulfate is used as a surfactant and foaming agent in toothpaste formulations, supporting lather and plaque-removal performance during brushing. It may be formulated alongside functional zinc salts such as zinc sulfate. Suitability must be confirmed against the required oral-care grade, formulation and target-market rules.

  • Recommended grade: oral-care and market-specific suitability must be confirmed before purchase

  • Selection checks: grade, trace elements, formulation compatibility and market documentation

  • Process note: confirm suitability with the full oral-care formulation and required regulatory standard
